Hong Kong does not have uniform statutory visiting hours for residential care homes. Visiting hours are set by individual homes. Whether you can visit freely therefore depends on the policy of the home you choose.
Section 16.3.2 of the Code of Practice for Residential Care Homes (Elderly Persons) (Cap. 459A, June 2024 revised edition) encourages homes to maintain good communication with family members and encourages family members to visit more often during the early admission period, so as to support older persons in adjusting to residential care home life.
However, note that:
- Section 13.6.2 states that when an infectious disease outbreak occurs in the home, the home may notify or remind visitors and relatives about the situation and adjust visiting arrangements, such as restricting visiting hours or requiring appointments.
- Since visiting arrangements differ from home to home, you should ask the home about its visiting policy before admission, including visiting sessions and whether appointments are required.
